Universal Aims for all children’s homes:
- Perform a needs analysis initial contact and evaluation of the children’s homes with a staff member in a management position
- Develop a sustainable relationship with management staff through regular contact and feedback meetings reaffirming aims and goals formulated between Thusanani and the children’s homes itself
- Ongoing advice and support through regular visits to the children’s homes and forming a sustainable relationship
- Assessment and screening of children on an ongoing basis to re-evaluate the children’s progress and to determine treatment goals
- Individual and Group therapy sessions intervention provided on a weekly basis to set realistic therapy goals for individuals and groups
- Encouraging playtime within the daily routine through training and regular interaction with the management and staff of the children’s homes
Specific objectives for individual children’s homes:
Mother Theresa’s Home: Beneficiaries: Approx 36 children, varying delay, special needs
Aims:
- Developing a play room to encourage stimulation by organizing and donating toys as well as training staff and volunteers to use this room appropriately.
- Expose the children to the outside world - by taking them on periodic outings and a weekly visit to the Toy Library at TMI for further developmental stimulation.
St Francis Care Centre: Beneficiaries: Approx 25 children, varying delay, special needs
Aims:
- Assisting crèche teachers to include school readiness ideas in to the preschool daily program by working in the classroom closely with the teachers
- Assisting with future placement of physically disabled children in the children’s homes, by ensuring inclusion of these orphans into the children’s homes current stimulation program and by helping adapt the school environment and educating the teachers on disability
The Love of Christ Ministries: Beneficiaries: Approx 7 children, special needs, disabilities
Aims:
- Indirect training of care-workers to further stimulate the children with special needs by including the care-workers in the therapy sessions
- Individual therapy for disabled orphans
Impilo Adoption Home: Beneficiaries: Approx 7 children, varying delay, special needs
Aims:
- To create a volunteer / care-worker training program and pilot it at this children’s home by working closely with both the management team, the volunteers and care-workers.
- To create a training program for potential foster parents
Villa Le Themba Special Needs Children’s Home: Beneficiaries: Approx 10 children, special needs, disabilities
Aims:
- Training of care-workers by selecting the most senior care-worker to work closely with the therapist on a weekly basis for the next 6 months to learn handling and simple daily exercises for specific disabled children as well the appropriate use of toys
- Individual therapy for disabled orphans
- Assisting the children’s homes in future planning of a possible permanent placement for these special needs, disabled orphans by attending joint meetings with management teams of interested organizations ( If this project succeeds, Thusanani will set future goals regarding our involvement).
Lambano Sanctuary: Beneficiaries: Approx 25 children, varying delay, special needs
Aims:
- Individual and group therapy for developmentally delayed, school readiness and special needs (disabled) orphans
- Formulation and continuation of a developmental stimulation program with the various age groups culminating in school readiness by running weekly stimulation groups with the 3 to 4 years olds, 5 to 6 years olds, as well as the school readiness program at TMI and monitoring of the grade one’s.

Assisting with future placement of physically and mentally disabled children in the children’s homes, by ensuring inclusion of these orphans into the children’s homes current stimulation program in the interim by training the care-workers on handling techniques and daily exercises as well as including the house mother in all therapy sessions.
