We are a non profit organization operating from the Children's Memorial Institute in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Our focus is on children aged 0 – 6 years, who are abandoned, orphaned or vulnerable. Some of the children are infected with HIV/AIDS and many of them are orphaned as a result of loosing their parents to HIV/AIDS. In addition, some children also struggle with disabilities such as hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy or genetic conditions.
Thusanani aims to empower Child Care Centers (orphanages) and care givers in the community crèches to realise the importance of early development and play as the "food" to nourish the brain and body. By intervening early, we can assist the development of functional little beings towards a brighter future in South Africa.
As occupational therapists we can provide specific therapy and early intervention for these children and together, through the training of caregivers help to create an environment that will stimulate these children and help to prepare them for school and the life ahead of them. Our aim is to prevent future disability and to improve their chances of adoption.
Thusanani's ultimate goal is to provide these children with the physical, emotional and cognitive stimulation and care that will encourage the necessary development for them to reach their potential.
